How to Talk about Art
How to Talk about Art
What's up art stars! Have you ever found yourself in a situation where you had to give your opinion of a work of art? Or visited a museum or gallery, and had to chat about art with a friend or date? How did you do? Were you tongue tied? Unsure what to say? Well, this video is for you!
I will break down three ways to talk about art.
1.Formal Analysis: This is when you break down the Elements of Art and Principles of Design. Using these concepts you can chat about the use of color, linework or shapes. How does the artist use harmony or contrast? Here you are talking about what you see and how the artist used the ingredients of art.
2. Storyteller: This way to interact with the art will be a blend of your personal memories, experiences and even senses. How do they relate to the work of art, so that you can tell its story. You become the narrator of the piece and draw upon your own experiences to fill in the blanks.
3. Interpretive: In this instance, you blend your experiences listed above and now share your interpretation of the work of art. You seek the meaning of the piece through the clues found within. This requires more critical thinking skills.
I hope this helps the next time you are to have a conversation about art. Let me know your thoughts in the comments below. Remember to join my Facebook group to practice your skills.
See you in a future video!
