How To Create an Illustration from Start to Finish

How To Create an Illustration from Start to Finish

Congratulations, you got the job! You are hired to create the cover art for a book. Now how do you create the Illustration?

In this video, I will share my process, step by step, how to create an Illustration. So grab your pencil and notebook, class is in session!

Step 1:

Gather all of your information from your client. The author may let you read the manuscript or just offer details to the story and characters. Ask the author what concepts do they have about the cover illustration.

Step 2:

Draw some rough images of what the cover will look like. When I mean rough I mean rough. Your focus here is on the composition and forms. Don’t get caught up on details at this stage.

Step 3:

When you have settled on the composition, create a color rough. Test color palettes and create a more finished drawing.

Step 4:

Combine references from photographs, models, and so on to inform your creative process.

Step 5:

Draw out your final image onto the canvas. Draw as much detail as possible! You do not want to be problem-solving during the painting phase. It is much easier to solve a problem during the pencil stage that the painting stage.

Step 6:

Paint, baby, paint!

My process may seem intense, but trust me it's necessary. These steps help you create a successful painting. The more homework you do before you paint, the stronger your final image will be. Remember to keep painting and drawing in a sketchbook. You will get stronger and more confident with each new work of art you create. I believe in you!

See you in a future video!
